"Why aren't I fluent?
As the two year mark approaches, South America has been my home for almost 22 months. That´s approximately 730 days of exposure to the Spanish language, not to mention 7 years of British schooling on the subject. One might assume that by now, I am entirely fluent: never a pause, never a confused face, able to read books, watch films and listen to the radio without the threat of even a glimmer of misunderstanding.
One, would be wrong.
I can indeed "get by" perfectly well in castellano, I can be understood, understand and have even mananged to dump someone and be dumped in this foreign tongue. I am able to read books without too much call for a dictionary and watch films without the need to pause."
